Chapter 8
The next day at school, I decide tot take the bus to school. It was a nice ride. Alone time and time to think was what I really needed in the morning.
When I got t school, I saw Michael and Rebecca sitting on his car hood. They looked as if they were having fun, so I just walked past and into the school. Hopefully he didn’t recognize me.
“Harmony!” He ran to me as I put my things into my locker. “Hey, why didn’t you say hi?” He asked me.
“You were talking to Rebecca, so I didn’t want to disturb you.”
“Harmony, I was waiting for you and being nice to her. She just hopped onto my car hood with me and decided to talk.”
“Oh, well, I feel dumb now.”
“It’s alright. How did you get your locker open?”
“I punched it open myself.”
“Impressive,” he smiled at me as we walked to first period.
“Harmony, is it true you and Michael are together now?” Mrs. Gibson asks with a smile.
“Um, no. Where did you hear that?” I’m confused. Who would say that? I mean, I wouldn’t mind being in a relationship with him but someone already thinks so?
“Just a guess. It sure did look like it at the movies.”
“You went to see One Dark Night?” Michael asked.
“With my husband, I sure did. And I saw the two of you snuggling up and getting all… this isn’t an appropriate conversation. Please sit,” she tells us and looks down at her papers.
“Want to sit by the window again?” Michael asks.
“Nah, I want to sit in the back today.” We head to the back and sit down. He places my books on the desk and scoots his closer to mine.
“What happened after I left?” He asked and played with my fingers.
“My dad thought you took my virginity.”
“What?!” He laughed.
“Yeah. I had to clear that up real quick. But he did tell me he didn’t have a problem with you like he did with my other boyfriends.”
“So, he thinks I’m your boyfriend?” He smiled and held my hand.
“Yeah. Then after that I went to bed. What did you do when you got home?”
“I talked to Janet then stayed up thinking and went to sleep.”
“What were you thinking about?”
“Everything that happened.”
“That’s good.”
“I really do hope you don’t move, Harmony,” he rubbed my hand with his thumb.
“Why?”
“Because I want to-”
“Hey, Mikey!” Rebecca sat on his desk.
Michael rolled his eyes, “hi, Rebecca.” He fake smiled.
“What are you doing tonight?”
“I want to try and hang out tonight again.”
“Well, I’m busy again.”
“With Harmony?”
“No, but that’s not a bad idea,” he laughed.
“Do you like her?” She urged.
“Does it matter?”
“You’ve changed since she came here. We used to hang out all the time.”
“Correction. You always wanted to hang out all the time.” Rebecca rolled her eyes and went to sit down. “What were we talking about?” He asked and grabbed my hand again.
“Well, you were saying you do hope I don’t move.”
“Oh yeah. Cause I want to-”
“Alright, class. We’re about to take a pop quiz. Michael and Harmony, I need the two of you to get your desks from being so close.”
Michael moved his desk and drummed his fingers on it.
When’s he passed out the quizzes, I was completely lost. I looked over at Michael and noticed he was breezing through it. I raised my hand to tell her I don’t understand.
“Yes, Harmony?”
“I don’t understand any of this.”
“I can’t help you,” she smiled.
Michael looked over, “I’ll help her.”
“Michael, this is a test.”
“You said it was a pop quiz.”
“Right.”
“So, I’ll be glad to help her. Remember Mrs. Gibson, she’s new here and in New York, she was behind in math.”
She thought about it, “alright Michael, you two can go in the tutor room.”
I smiled and gathered my things.
Rebecca looked back at us and raised her hand.
“Yes, Rebecca?”
“I don’t understand this either.”
“Nice try, Rebecca. But you passed the tests and quizzes.”
Rebecca’s face turned red and she turned around of pure embarrassment.
“Come on, Harmony,” Michael told me and grabbed my hand. I followed him out the room and shut the door.
“Michael?” Mrs. Gibson shouted at us.
“Ma’am?”
“You know class ends at nine thirty. Be back at nine twenty sharp.”
“Yes, ma’am,” he said and shut the door to the tutor room. “Do you really not understand this?”
“I’m honest.”
“Alright,” Michael began and explained it to me.
“Is this right?” I ask him.
“Yes. You learn pretty quick, Harmony,” he smiled and held my hand in his.
I looked at the clock above our heads and noticed it was only nine.
“We have twenty minutes.”
“I don’t look forward to going back in that room until then,” he told me and scooted his chair closer to mine. “I wanted to ask you something.”
“What did you want to ask me?”
“Do you wanna be-” The fire alarm went off. Michael grabbed my hand and we walked out of the room.
“This is a fire drill. All students out to the front of the building,” I heard the principal say over the intercom. I looked at Michael and noticed he looked frustrated.
We found Mrs. Gibson and followed the class out to the front. Rebecca walked through our hands and began talking to Michael. He turned around and left Rebecca behind.
“She tries her best to separate us,” he smiled and hugged me.
I wonder what he wanted to ask me.
