Chapter 38
(Shayla)
“Thank you, Byron. I had a great night,” I smiled as he walked me to the front door.
“I’m glad you had fun. I was worried you were bored,” he laughed.
“Far from it! I had a ton of fun. Maybe we should do it again some time.”
“I was just thinking that. How about next Friday?”
“We’ll see how my schedule is.”
“Okay, so I’ll see you Tuesday, then?”
“Of course,” I smiled. He opened his arm for a hug.
I hugged him and quickly let go, “goodnight, Byron.” I went in the house and shut the door. I haven’t had fun like that in a while. I’m not the type to party, but when Byron took me to a club, I actually danced. And that’s not like me, because I swear, I’m a horrible dancer. I don’t think anyone cared though. I took a shower and got ready for bed. I thought about the day’s events, from me thinking Michael let the fame get to his head so much to not think about me to him coming to visit for the weekend… I need to call him back. Just as I got up, the phone rang, “hello?” I answered, hoping it was Michael.
“It’s David.”
I sighed, “what’s up?”
“I’m not coming home tonight. I’m spending the night with Tess. I might not even be back until Sunday, to be honest with you. So, you get the house to yourself this weekend, but I called to lay down some rules, okay? Number one: don’t have sex.”
I rolled my eyes, “is that it?”
“It is. Oh and no guys over.”
I looked at the phone, “what? David, I am a grown woman. Who are you to tell me who I can and cannot have over? I pay half the bills and rent over here. You must have me mixed up with someone else.”
“Whatever. Just don’t have sex.”
“Grown woman,” I reminded him, hanging up. Who does he expect me to have sex with? I’m not even sexually active. He better get out of here with all that. I called Michael.
“Hello?” His soothing voice filled my ear.
“Hi,” I smiled.
“I was hoping you would call,” I could hear the smile in his voice as he spoke in a lower, seductive voice. I’ve always loved how his voice sounded at night. “How was your date with Byron?”
“It was not a date, but we had fun.”
“What did you do?”
“We rushed to the reservation, went to a movie and then we went to a club.”
He laughed, “you went to a club? Did you dance?”
“I tried. I don’t think I was very good at it though.”
“Why not?”
“I can’t dance.”
“Yes, you can. Remember when I visited you and your family, and we danced in Mariah’s treehouse? I remember it like it was yesterday. After that family dinner, you and I snuck out back. There was a full moon out and the stars were bright. You told me you wanted to take me up to the treehouse, so we went and read some comic books. Then I took you hand and led you in a dance, but you didn’t want to and complained about how there wasn’t any music to dance to. But I finally got you to dance with me. You were so shy… You can dance.” I blushed deeply as he reminded me of what had occurred two years ago.
“That was a magical night,” I managed to say.
“It really was. I’d loved to do that again someday. Minus getting yelled at in the morning by Matt for sleeping out there together.”
“You’ve gotta admit, that was pretty funny,” I laughed.
“To you…”
“He swore we did it too, but I highly doubt after people do the deed, they put their clothes back on and go to sleep next to one another.”
“That’s the funny part! He kept saying we might’ve put our clothes back on and went to sleep. Like, that doesn’t make sense!”
“Matt is such a character,” I laughed.
“How’s David?”
“He’s David. Always mean. Nothing has changed,” I sighed.
“Do you think there is a reason to why he’s so mean to you?”
“He’s the middle child. Aren’t all middle children mad at everyone for no reason?” I laughed. “Middle children are supposed to be the peacemaker, but David is the complete opposite.”
“That’s an interesting case.”
“I know, right? But he has a girlfriend now, Tess. Maybe she will soften him up a bit.”
“Hopefully… Would David be upset if I wanted to spend the night up there with you?”
“David does not decide what I can and cannot do here.”
“I want to spend time with you if you don’t mind. I want to go to school with you too.”
I gasped, “really?”
“Yes! I would love to teach with you.”
“That would be fun, but I highly doubt you can do that. I suppose you can stay up here with me.”
“Is that a yes?”
“Yes!” I said a little bit too quickly.
“Perfect. I’ll come up tomorrow.”
“I’m so excited, Michael!”
“I’m excited to see you. It’s been so long…”
“I know,” I sighed. “We have so much to catch up on.”
“You’re telling me! I can’t wait to see your smile. I can’t wait to hug and hold you. I just love hearing your voice, let alone your laugh!”
I blushed, “Michael…”
“Promise me something.”
“Anything.”
“Promise me you’ll marry me, Shayla. I don’t ever want to lose you again.”
I nodded, “of course.” I’m sure he is just asking for the near future.
“I’m serious, Shayla. I love you and I want to marry you.”
